A Guide For Grounding in Waiting: Journal Prompts for March

By the time March arrives in New England, I find myself restless and eager for the first signs of spring, for bird songs and bright green buds. But here, winter lingers. The earth reminds me that growth cannot be rushed.

Nature takes its time, and so must we. Though we can’t rush our blooming, we can root ourselves more deeply. This is a season for grounding, for tending to our inner landscape, for nurturing ourselves so that when growth comes, we will rise without depletion.

As I created this month’s journaling prompts, the image of a wintering tree kept returning to me, inspiring me to write and share this poem with you. I’ve added a few bonus prompts drawn from its themes. Let this poem set the tone for the rest of this month’s Journaling Guide.

The Wintering Tree

Through the coldand windy nights,

the tree endures,

holding fast to the ground

through nourishing roots

that run deep and wide.

Life seems gone

from her lifeless limbs—

unless you look closely

at the tiny buds,

dreams of the future,

waiting for Spring’s warmth.

Naked she stands,

yet powerful within,

gathering strength to blossom

and bloom at her given time.

March 2025’s Theme is Grounding in the Waiting: March’s 70-page guide features 31 different prompts that invite you to till the soil of your heart, strengthening your foundation so that when your spring arrives, your soul is ready to expand and bloom. This guide also includes bonus prompts for the poem shared above.

Journaling Prompts for Reflection

Here are some journaling prompts to guide your reflection this March:

  1. Like the wintering tree, I am preparing for...

  2. The unseen growth happening within me is...

  3. If I trust my own timing, I will...

  4. What feels barren in my life now that might actually be holding future growth?

These prompts encourage deep thinking and self-discovery. Take your time with each one. Allow your thoughts to flow freely onto the page.

A Space to Journal Together

If you’ve been craving a place to write and reflect in community, I’d love to invite you to join my From a Whisper to a Roar Journaling Circle.

We gather twice a month, on Fridays at 9:00 AM EST.

The Journaling Circle is a supportive, non-judgmental space where you can come as you are. We begin with breathwork and meditation, then move into prompts and poetic inspiration. We write in silence and end with an optional reflection. You can share or simply be held in the quiet presence of others who are also doing this work.

The Importance of Community in Reflection

Being part of a community can enhance your journaling experience. Sharing thoughts and feelings with others can provide new perspectives. It can also create a sense of belonging. In our journaling circle, you’ll find support and encouragement. This shared space allows for deeper exploration of your thoughts.

Creating Your Own Reflection Space

If joining a circle isn’t possible for you, consider creating your own reflection space at home. Here are some tips:

  • Choose a quiet spot: Find a place where you feel comfortable and free from distractions.

  • Set a regular time: Consistency can help you build a journaling habit.

  • Gather your materials: Have your journal, pens, and any other supplies ready.

  • Limit distractions: Put your phone away and turn off notifications.

Final Thoughts

Learning to love ourselves is the biggest gift we can give ourselves and those around us. When we come to a place of acceptance for ourselves, it becomes easier to embrace those around us as well. It all starts with learning to be comfortable being with ourselves in the silence and with our own thoughts. One way to practice this skill is by journaling.

Whether you join a community or create your own space, allow yourself to explore your thoughts. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.
